Women Group Calls For Violence-Free Elections In Rivers State

The Women in Peace and Security Network (WPSN) Rivers State chapter has called for the eradication of all forms of electoral violence in the state. WPSN made this call on November 6, during the occasion of the network’s commemoration of the 2016 International Women’s Day.

WPSN, which is a network of several stakeholders including Civil Society Organisations,Faith Based Organisations,Community Groups, Medical and Legal Practitioners, Ministries Departments and Agencies, Security Agencies, etc, called for urgent attention by all stakeholders in ensuring that elections are violence free.

According to the group, when violence is taken away from the electoral processes, women will participate more, and democracy will be strengthened.

At the end of the commemorative event, which held at NULGE Consulate,Port Harcourt, the group came up with a Gender Policy which takes into consideration; women in peace and security; livelihood, economic empowerment, and environmental justice; reproductive health rights of women, education and agriculture; and women’s political participation, etc.

The group further called for government and all other statutory bodies to adopt the contents of the Gender Policy, and see to its implementation in all sectors.

Convened by Gender and Development Action (GADA) with support from the Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP), WPSN has been at the forefront of advocacy for the rights of women, especially as it concerns the reduction of Violence Against Women and Children, and the inclusion of women in peace building, leadership positions, and conflict resolution.
