“We Are Worried About The Type Of Clean Up That Will Be Done In Ogoni”–CSOs

The heads of key Civil Society Organizations in the Niger Delta have expressed concern about the type of clean up that will be carried out in Ogoni.

Speaking freely in a meeting called by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria Paul Arkwright, principal heads of Stakeholder Democracy Networkv (SDN), Gender and Development Action (GADA), Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD), KEBETKACHE, and environmental activist Celestine Akpobari expressed their concern on the type of clean up that will be carried out.

“One is alo worried about the type of clean up that will be done” Inemo Samiama of the SDN stated.

The group called for indepth clean up, with UNEP performing oversight functions.

In his own contributions, Nenibarini Zabbey of CEHRD pointed out that;

“Since the launch of the UNEP report in 2011,there have been 139 spills from SPDC in Ogoniland. The implication is that a new baseline is necessary as the old one is no longer accurate”

Mr. Zabbey further requested that the laws for the clean up should be gazetted and made public.

GADA and KEBETKACHE, leaning deeply on their various community engagements within the Niger Delta called for the total sensitization of community people on the need to understand what the clean up is about (in order to manage expectations), and the need to protect their environment.
