Uniport Crisis: Some of the Students Were Armed With Guns

The University of Port Harcourt crisis that resulted in the unfortunate death of the President of Management Sciences, Peter Offurum has received a lot of attention. That of course has¬†always been the case when the life of a young man was abruptly ended, with government agencies being responsible. Deep condemnation of Peter’s death has been the order of the day. Yet, there is an aspect of the story that nobody has told.

Reliable information reaching Ikenga Chronicles shows that the students had completely went berserk, destroying the property of lecturers and the school, and in one final act of defiance, had installed a fellow student as the acting Vice Chancellor (a symbolic display of non-compliance to established authorities).

As such actions are wont to go,the total breakdown in law and order led to some bag eggs joining in the fray. An witness account states that some of those bad eggs were armed with guns, as such making the face-off with the security agencies, evenly matched, to say the least. Offurum’s death is therefore a result of security agencies having to use live ammunition because they too faced live ammunition.

The youths are the future of this country. It is therefore necessary that as future leaders, that they follow legal and procedural ways in addressing issues. When violence is taken as the road to addressing issues, a narrative that could have ended without fatalities spirals out of control.
