Two killed as cultists clash in Ondo carnival — Oluwaseun Akingboye

Two persons were shot dead on Monday in a duel between two rival cult groups during a carnival, which later turned bloody in Ondo West council of the state.

The unfortunate incident occurred at the carnival organized by youths of Kogbona Street in the ancient Ondo City, where trigger-happy cultists had a field day.

This led to the untimely death of a lady who was identified as Afusat Ayodeji and another, whose identity remained unknown and several other survivors who sustained various degrees of injuries and were hospitalized.

The Guardian gathered that the rival cult groups, before the Monday crisis, had engaged themselves in a fight earlier but residents in the street brokered peace between them.

However, in what appeared as a reprisal attack, a source said that a group suspected to be a cult group forcibly interrupted the carnival, which resulted in heated argument and uproar.

The source disclosed that gunshots were sporadically fired towards the direction of the procession, which killed late Ayodeji, who was said to be a tomato and pepper seller in one of the neighbourhood market.

The prompt intervention of the Enuowa Divisional Police Station curtailed further break down of law and order.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Enuowa Police Station, Mr. Kunle Omisakin a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said two persons were nabbed in connection with the assault and pre-meditated murder.

Omisakin said the matter has been transferred to the appropriate section at the Police Command Headquarters in Akure, the state capital, while investigation was still intensified to get to the root of the attack.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph confirmed the incident and said two suspects: Tosin Omosekeji, 29 years old and Tope Akinpelumi, 28 years; were arrested while others were at large.
“We are on the trail of others still at large, we are investigating the matter and all of them will be arrested and will be charged to court,” Joseph said.
