Top 10 News From The Niger Delta In 2018

On Pride of the Mangrove, we try to push the positive narratives of the Niger Delta to the world.

This year, with support from Ikenga Chronicles and Robinson Tombari Sibe, we came up with the following as our “Top 10 News Items” from the Niger Delta in 2018.


1- Nse, a 14 year old girl from Akwa Ibom set a national record in the 400M at the National Sports Festival held at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

2- The Ikwerre language was spoken in top hits courtesy of Duncan Mighty. First was “Fake Love” with Wizkid, before it was used in songs like “Gimme Love”, and “Lova Lova”.

3- Opobians in Rivers State were able to drive to their homes for the first time after the Rivers State Government finally built a road to the island kingdom.

4-Five Niger Delta States made it to the top six at the National Sports Festival at Abuja.

5- A modular refinery was flagged off in Bayelsa.

6- The construction of the Bodo-Bonny Road was flagged off

6- Seki, a Niger Delta dance drama took to the stage and is already billed for an international tour

7- Burna Boy show at the 02 Arena, London was sold out.

8- Akwa Ibom started producing electrical meters. This is a follow up to the feat of producing pencils and toothpicks.

9- Victor AD’s song, Wetin we Gain, without any popular label support, became a monster hit nationwide.

10- The Bole Festival hit its second year in 2018 pulled the entire Rivers State. In 2019, barring any complications, this festival will pull the entire nation to the city of Port Harcourt.
