The Mocking Eyes

–Paschal Nwosu

There comes a time in your life, when you can see nothing , no matter how long you stare. It seems your friends and family have conspired to keep things hidden from you.
Until now.
You can no longer go where you want to go.

You have to be taken there.

You pee and shit on your pants, and try not to notice the look of disgust, on the faces of your friends and family.

Everyone speaks in hushed voices around you .

It’s so painful. You are learning to depend on others for everything.

Because you know now those who truly love you. You can feel their hurt, as they look at you in anger, willing you to get on your feet and walk.

The others smile, thinly savouring your despair.

The mocking eyes spit into your hurt as you find strength to keep away the tears.

You know you are going to die, but there is just much of a chance you can survive this.

I say to you. To your spirit. Don’t give up.

Lay back and plan your survival to enjoy all the wealth you have toiled for and all the freedom you never enjoyed.

Dream of Bahamas and surreal places like climbing the walls of China.

Force that morsel down your throat and finish your meals. Drink that water and swallow the bitter medicine and pray for your own recovery.

If you do not believe in God, create one and pray to Him.

If you survive this, you will come to the utter understanding that life is beautiful, if you are willing to live it.

Close your eyes. Do not stare at those mocking eyes.

Do not see anything even if you stare because they only tell you you are clutching at straws.

Not all straws break, if they are thick enough.

Ignore their mocking eyes.

Now Begin.
