The Feast On Abiola’s Grave Continues

— Chuks Nwachuku

They pushed him on to his death. They have reaped power and riches as heroes of the people. Today, they serve the man who best represents the military jackboot that crushed Abiola to untimely death. They feast with him.

Buhari was an ally of Abacha, the man who tricked Abiola to compromise his struggle by supporting his junta to get off the ground. Abacha was the man who later imprisoned Abiola for succumbing to the push of the emergency heroes, who never supported his bid for the presidency at the beginning, to start a fight he was bound to lose. Buhari was by the side of Abacha for the three years that Abacha was in power, supporting his mistreatment of Abiola.

Abiola never came out of that imprisonment alive.

Tinubu Reacts To June 12 Declaration

Until two days ago, Buhari never called Abiola his hero. He never acted like any figure like that once lived amongst us. However, faced with near total expiration of the vital political food called goodwill, it is time to feast on the once loathed Abiola, again.

The insult will however not be hidden despite the feasting on the unfortunate dead. Kingibe who betrayed him to serve as Foreign Minister to Abacha when Abiola was in the gulag, on the road to death, would be decorated as a hero. Abiola is dead, he cannot be decorated. Kingibe it is who will be. He is the one beneficiary of this brinkmanship— he and the other hyenas that are not done with feasting on the dead.

Buhari’s Gift To Abiola: Beyond The Confines Of Legality

Abiola’s heroism will remain anonymous too, like the heroism of the unknown soldier. It will continue to be presumed. The election results will never be announced for the presumption to become fact. But what is that to those enjoying the feast on the dead? They are the heroes anyway. Not Abiola. This is about them. They are the heroes of the people. “Who is Abiola?”

What has happened to the children who have lost a father? What about the women who lost a husband? What about a business empire that crumbled?

Those feasting are too busy to care.
