Tension As DR Congo’s President, Joseph Kabila Refuses To Hand over Power As His Tenure Expires

Palpable tension has mounted  as President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo plots to stay in power beyond the expiration of his tenure as peaceful negotiation failed on Saturday.

Fears of fresh political violence in mineral-rich but unstable Congo were running high, with no elections planned and Kabila showing no inclination to step down by December 20.

Recall that Kabila was barred from seeking a third term by the constitution.

Security has been beefed up with roadblocks put up overnight on Sunday morning especially in opposition strongholds and other flashpoints around Kinshasa, the capital of Congo.

“We’re waiting to see what happens. The politicians are okay, it’s us, the little people, who suffer,” a source said.

The 45-year-old has been in power since his father Laurent Kabila was assassinated in 2001. He was elected in 2006, and again in 2011 in polls decried as rigged by the opposition.
