Russia 2018 W/Cup qualifier: Super Eagles to Miss Iwobi

Super Eagles player, Alex Iwobi has been confirmed to miss Friday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon in Uyo after suffering a thigh muscle strain.

This development remains a huge blow to Gernot Rohr’s team as the forward has been fantastic and a major part of the team in the past.

To ensure that no vacuum is created, Coach Gernot Rohr has hurriedly recalled standby CSKA Moscow player, Aaron Samuel to join the rest of the squad in Uyo as a replacement for the injured Iwobi.

Samuel made the last of seven international appearances two years ago but has got good memories with the Super Eagles.

Iwobi was due to join the Super Eagles training camp on Monday after Arsenal’s Premier League game at Liverpool on Sunday.

A tweet on the official handle of the Nigeria Super Eagles read: “Just in: Aaron Samuel called in to replace injured Alex Iwobi. Uche Agbo also invited.”

The 21-year old has made 11 international appearances for the three-time African champions with his only goal coming against Zambia in Nigeria’s 2-1 win in a World Cup qualifier away in Ndola on matchday 1.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick called on Nigerians to support the national team ahead of the crucial qualifiers.

“It’s painful Iwobi is out but we have players who will do the nation proud against Cameroon. What we need right now is the support of every Nigerian so that we can get the desired results in both games,” he said.
