Rohr Under Attack For Excluding NPFL Players

By Ikenga Chronicles March 9, 2017

Ex-international Garba Lawal blasted Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr for ignoring Nigeria Professional Football League players in his squad for friendly matches against Senegal and Burkina Faso in London.

Goalkeeper Ikenna Ezenwa is the only player from the domestic league in the squad that will face the West African countries in London and Lawal said the coach deserved the knocks over this.

Lawal said the coach had the sole responsibility to select his team, but overlooking players from the domestic league for friendly matches was not in the best interest of Nigeria.

He insisted it was hard tobelieve there was no player at home good enough to make the cut for friendly matches.

“The coach is in charge of his squad and takes full responsibility for team selection; however, having played this game to the highest level, I think I reserve the right to voice my opinion when things are not done the right way,” the former midfielder said.

“Rohr cannot convince me that none of the players in the league is good enough for his team, these are friendly games, even if you beat Burkina Faso and Senegal 10-0 respectively, it won’t make any difference but this is an opportunity for you to look at some other players and how they can fit into your plans.

“For instance, players from clubs that are playing in the CAF Champions League have had quite enough exposure to be considered. This thing is not good for our us; if we are trying to develop our league then we shouldn’t allow this to

Lawal who is a member of a 10- man Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation that is supposed to offer advice and approve the coach’s programmes said the inability of the group to meet with Rohr on his list prevented them from effectively carrying out their functions.

“The Technical Committee has not had a meeting since July last year. We have never met with the coach to ask him questions about his programmes since he was unvealed they usually send the list to us through e-mail and how much contribution can you make when you don’t see the coach?”
