Rivers Re-Run: Wike Accuses Amaechi of Invading Rivers With Over 300 Soldiers

By Ikenga Chronicles December 8, 2016

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has accused his predecessor and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi of invading the state with over 300 armed soldiers.

This revelation came as Wike and Amaechi engaged in verbal war over the  state of political killings in the state, ahead of the December 10 re-run election.

Amaechi, alleged that Wike and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were behind the killing of All Progressives Congress (APC) members.

But Wike described the allegation as baseless. He said there is no basis for him to kill in order to serve his people.

“Don’t you know that it is shameful for a former governor to come to the state with 300 soldiers? Even the president doesn’t move around with such number. He should stop chasing shadows.” the governor said.

Arriving at the Port Harcourt International Airport ahead of Saturday’s re-run legislative elections, Amaechi accused the governor of making “irresponsible comments” and abusing the office and privileges of the governor especially his interception of security operatives who were detailed to arrest corrupt judges in some states across the country.

He said: “Wike has not denied killing people; he sponsored those who carried arms in the 2015 general elections. Even during the campaigns, our people were beaten, manhandled and others threatened, leaving many dead.”

“But we will not continue to allow these things to happen like that. Members of the PDP were also responsible for the killing APC members in Omoku.”

“If Governor Wike and the PDP have justifiable evidence, let them present it to the general public and stop blackmailing me or INEC and police. The allegations are immaterial, null and void.”

‘’Why is Wike and PDP making too much noise and fruitless allegations?”

Amaechi argued that he was more popular than all those in the PDP because, when he left office in 2015 as governor of Rivers, he had over 75 per cent support from Rivers people and other Nigerians resident in the state.

He added: “Before now, I used to tell my party members to vote and protect their votes, but there have been complaints of indecent attacks from the PDP.”

“So, I have asked the APC members to protect their votes and their lives as well, because the PDP cannot be bigger than everybody everywhere.”

Also speaking on behalf of Wike, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Austin Tam-George, dismissed Amaechi’s allegation that the governor and PDP were behind the killings in the state. The commissioner, in a statement, said that Wike does not need arms to defeat the APC in Rivers State based on his impressive record of service delivery, which he stated has won the hearts of the people.

He alleged that Amaechi’s attempt to steal the mandate of the people on Saturday through the force of arms would be resisted, noting that the former governor will be defeated once again.

He noted that the APC in the state was suffocating under the weight of Amaechi’s “disastrous legacy as governor of Rivers State for eight years.”

He claimed that Amaechi used the funds meant for the payment of salaries of workers and pensioners to fund the political activities of the APC, thereby plunging millions of families into abject poverty and misery.

“Rotimi Amaechi is probably the most toxic political personality in Rivers State because of his history of financial recklessness and visionless leadership during his time as governor of Rivers State,” the commissioner said.
