Reps collate details of killings in South East — Terhemba Daka

MASSOB, IPOB factions brief panel at night

The House of Representatives Committee on Army has started collating information on the alleged killing of members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by security agencies in Anambra State on May 30, 2016.

Chairman of the committee, Rimamnde Shawulu told The Guardian that the panel was however, awaiting presentation by some other political stakeholders in the South East after which a public hearing on the matter will be held at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Business activities in the state were disrupted on the said date when Biafran agitators clashed with security agencies, during the 50th anniversary of their fallen heroes near St. Edmund’s Catholic Church, Nkpor, off Nkpor -Umuoji road, in Idemili North Local Government Council.

It led to alleged killing of some members of MASSOB and IPOB by the security agencies. It was against this background that the House of Representatives asked its Committee on Army to embark on a fact-finding mission to the South East.

A faction of the aggrieved victims however, stayed away when the panel arrived Enugu, a development that forced the committee to demand written memoranda. This option was communicated to them via a go-between.

Another faction however, later testified at a closed-door meeting at night.

A military Commanding Officer (CO) in Anambra, Col Isa M Abdullahi said the activities of MASSOB, IPOB and their affiliated groups, were detrimental to national security.

Abdullahi said apart from preaching hatred through their radio broadcast, the group has also been threatening as well as carrying out various actions capable of undermining the corporate existence of Nigeria.

He said their forceful closure of markets and businesses have continued to dislocate businesses in the state.

“Similarly, their violent protests and continued attack on other Nigerians residing or carrying out their legitimate duties have resulted in deaths, injuries and destruction of properties, which could result to reprisal action in other parts of the country.

Also, representative of the Director, Department of State Security (DSS), SA Mohammad, revealed that the pro-Biafran agitators were clamoring for a separate country out of Nigeria, and have started producing international Passport, Driver’s Licence and Vehicle Number Registration Plate among others.

He stated that the Nigerian constitution does not recognise any republic within the Federal Republic of Nigeria and any thing contrary is treason.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Johnson-Babatunde Kokumo, representing Anambra State Commissioner of Police, told the panel that 45 male suspects have been charged to court between May 31 2016 and June 6 2016 after an attack on the military with all sorts of weapons during a clash at Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by New Tarzan, Boreo and old Nkpor-Awka Road.
