Prince Uche Secondus: Why APC Is So Scared

Ever since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost the Presidential election in 2015, the party has been hit by crisis after crisis. In its journey towards trying to find its footing again, it has traversed the terrains of severe defections, having two Caretaker Committees running simultaneously, and faced a lengthy court process. Then suddenly, the court cases came to an end, and the party appeared to be unified under one Caretaker Committee chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

The PDP’s many travails led the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who from all indications was culpable in throwing fuel into the fire of PDP’s crises to boldly declare that the party was dead. So when the party began the process of holding an elective convention on the 9th of December, the APC went to work again, trying to find all ways possible to ridicule the process.

The plan seemed to have worked when it became obvious that led by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, most of the PDP state governors were rooting for former acting Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus to emerge as the substantive Chairman, against the widely spread story that the party had zoned the Chairmanship position to the South West. Secondus is from the South South, and Wike and his team insisted that the position was zoned to the South with no further micro-zoning done. This situation provided a handhold for another crisis to brew, and the APC and its media machinery went to work full time!

By the early hours of Sunday the 10th of December however, Prince Uche Secondus had emerged the Chairman of the party, while his closest rivals Professor Adeniran and Raymond Dokpesi rejected the result. A few hours into Sunday, Chief Dokpesi had made a u-turn, and accepted the result. So it does appear that finally, there will be no crisis, as Prince Secondus has extended a hand of fellowship to all party members.

Indeed, of all the candidates who contested for the party’s Chairmanship position, Uche Secondus stands heads and shoulders above all, as the one man who possesses the experience and the qualities with which the party can dislodge APC and President Muhammadu Buhari from Aso Rock.So naturally, the APC would have wanted any other person other than Secondus to emerge the National Chairman of the PDP! But that was not to be.

A committed and experienced party man, Secondus’ Curriculum Vitae is filled with success stories. From his youth, he worked his way up as a party man, from the state level to the federal level, and at all times ( bar the 2015 elections where he was only assisting Adamu Mua’azu) he had delivered. He is one man, who possesses the grit and guile needed by the PDP. The APC is well aware of this. That was why when it became obvious that Prince Secondus was going to emerge the leader of the party, they panicked, and began to throw everything they have towards discrediting the process. They spread false news, and tried to instigate South Westerners by talking about the injustice of “robbing” them of the Chairmanship position, all in the hope of starting another crisis in the party. But it seemed that this time around, the PDP was ready, and therefore decided not to be distracted. As Secondus said during his acceptance speech, the focus of the party at the moment is on dismantling the “conspiracy” that is APC, and ensuring that power returns to the people of Nigeria.

To achieve this herculean task, unity, and the strengthening of internal democracy are key for the PDP. No other man knows this more than Uche Secondus. That is why it is believed that he will use the first few months of his stewardship to bring back on board all disgruntled party members and convince them of the need to put the country and party first.

With the emergence of Prince Secondus as the substantive PDP National Chairman, backed as he is by all PDP state governors, led by the electioneering genius, Nyesom Wike, and the bold Governor Ayodele Fayose, the APC would face one of its toughest battle to retain power at the centre. The APC faithfuls know this, that is why since Uche Secondus was elected, the APC’s total focus has been on the PDP and nowhere else.
