President Buhari’s Hide-and-Seek Game With The Fulani Herdsmen (Terrorists)

As Nigerians continue to be slaughtered by terrorists posing as herdsmen, it appears that the tragic drama surrounding the issue has no end in sight.

Information making the rounds now, as published by The Tribune is that a Presidency source has stated that the Department of State Services (DSS) has found out that those who have been slaughtering Nigerians, are not Fulani herdsmen, but rather members of the terrorist group, Islamic State (ISIS). According to the report, the perpetrators are part of the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA)–which is an affiliate of ISIS–who were sent to the South South and Middle Belt regions of Nigeria, to carry out terrorist acts!

This new information of course would have been laughable, except that it seems to be in line with the assertion by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu. While it might be in sync with the narrative generated by the propagandist El-Rufai, it is completely at variance with the position of President Buhari, who told Benue State elders to “accommodate their fellow country men”. Buhari’s utterance shows his acceptance that those who have been carrying out the evil massacres are Nigerians! And Buhari should know.

Buhari’s position is also in tandem with the views of the many victims of the attacks, who confirm that they were attacked by Fulani herdsmen! And the victims too should know, since most times, what leads to the attacks are either of the people trying to stop their cattle from grazing on their farmlands, or the people killing cows that destroyed their farms.

Yet, despite all of the evidences available against the armed herdsmen, Buhari’s government has refused to deal with them decisively. Instead, when they strike, months are spent trying to “bring the culprits to book”, while right under the noses of the security forces are the leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) who openly spoke of resisting the anti-open grazing law in Benue State by any means possible, before the New Year day massacre of about 73 Benue indigenes!

Again, considering the carnage already wrought on Nigeria by the herdsmen, it was only fitting that they be labelled terrorists and treated as such. This is especially so when one considers the fact that the Indigenous People Of Biafra(IPOB), who never killed or attacked anybody was speedily declared terrorists by the Buhari administration! Talk about using a machine gun in killing a house fly!

But the Fulani herdsmen move around with AK-47s; raze down villages, and slaughter the old, young, male, female. In fact, just yesterday, a video surfaced online of the Fulani herdsmen dancing gleefully while wielding AK-47s!

All of these evidences are before the President, still, he seems to find no reason why the group should be treated as terrorists. Rather, it seems that the President is doing everything possible to ensure that the herdsmen are blameless.

Enter this new report; and it suddenly became obvious that the Buhari administration is about to use propaganda to exculpate the killer herdsmen. By twisting the facts and saying that the killers are not herdsmen, the Federal Government opens up a chance to divert attention, thus allowing the killer herdsmen the freedom to continue to perpetrate their dastardly acts on innocent Nigerians. This seems to be the narrative El-Rufai had in mind, when he first pushed the agenda that the killers are not Nigerians. It seems that finally, they have agreed to firmly push the narrative, hence the emergence of these new “facts” discovered by the DSS, in the course of their “investigations”!

The questions everyone should be asking right now are, why is it difficult for President Buhari (who swore an oath to defend Nigerians) to act decisively in matters concerning the Fulani herdsmen? Is the President compromised in some way? Why is it that despite the overwhelming evidence that the killers are Fulani herdsmen, an attempt is now being made to totally exculpate the herdsmen?

Nigerian lives should matter, especially to the man who is the “father of the nation”. If for some reasons they no longer do, then the right thing to do is for the people to rise up and demand the resignation of the man, since he can no longer protect them.
