“Onojie of Uromi Apologises, Makes Peace With Betty Okoebor” — Gloria Adagbon

The Onojie of Uromi, His Royal Highness Aslem Aidenojie has apologised to Mrs Betty Okoebor for the brutal attack following Edo State Chapter of APC’s ultimatum to the suspended monarch to apologise to all Edo women or face court action.

It will be recalled that the monarch was suspended from office for 7 days as Onojie of Uromi by the Edo State Executive Council in a letter dated October 26, 2016 following his attack on Mrs Okoebor.

Violence against any human being is a crime against humanity and should be condemned. Violence against women and the girl child is unacceptable and should be condemned. Violence from those in a position authority and trust should be frowned at and condemned in its entirety.

It is therefore refreshing to see that the Onogie of Uromi have done the honourable thing by apologising to the woman he assaulted and setting a good example from what could be termed a bad precedent. This is because as an Onogie, he wields great influence on the people and his actions of “slapping” a defenceless woman in public could be construed as a norm by his followers and people who may see the Onogie as a role model.

To those who have been berating Oshiomhole for exercising his executive authority by asking the Onogie to apologise, I believe that there are certain actions which never be politicised and violence against women is one of them. If we are going to build a decent society for ourselves, those who abuse women and girls, whether in a public place or at home (domestic violence) should be held accountable. Violence against anyone should never be condoned or encouraged in the first place, let alone any argument in defence of it.

Edo women salute the Onogie of Uromi for towing the path of honour and hope that attacking a woman – publicly or privately doesn’t happen again. Furthermore, we hope the wailing wailers like PDP Edo State, the Uromi Voice amongst others, who should have been at the forefront to condemn any act of violence against women, will now move on and find something else to wail about. God bless the peacemakers for they will find favour in God and man. God bless us all
