Ondo Poll: Jegede’s Fate Uncertain as Appeal Court Suspends Hearing

There is uncertainty over the hope of Eyitayo Jegede having his name returned as the Peoples Democratic Party’s(PDP) candidate in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State. This is as the Appeal Court again declined to rule on the crisis rocking the party.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had, based on the order by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja, dropped Jegede, the Ahmed Makarfi-led PDP candidate’s name and replaced it with Jimoh Ibrahim, the Ali Modu Sheriff-faction’s candidate.

Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Senator Ben Obi, his faction’s secretary are therefore seeking leave to appeal the June 29 decision of the Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Okon Abang, which affirmed Sheriff as chairman of the PDP, a judgement on which basis, the same Justice Abang, declared Jimoh Ibrahim PDP’s governorship candidate in Ondo State.

However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Tuesday suspended indefinitely its hearing into the motions and claimed that its decision was based on a petition filed by one of the parties in the matter on Monday.

A panel of three judges led by Jumai Sankey had claimed that its integrity was compromised by a petition filed against it by Biyi Poroye, a member of Sheriff’s Faction of PDP.

According to Sankey, the petitioner had alleged that the court under her leadership, was prone to being compromised for financial gains and has forwarded the petition to the President of the Court of Appeal, Zainab Bulkachuwa.

Consequently, the three judges on the panel withdrew their participation in the case, pending the decision of the petition by the judicial body responsible for investigating such matters, the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The court had also on Friday reserved ruling in the motions, before the Tuesday date to sit on the matter was finally fixed.
