Nigeria’s Bicycle-Riding Minister, Ojo Maduekwe Dies at 71

Chief Ojo Maduekwe is dead. The former Foreign Minister who was born May 6, 1945 in a part that was formerly  Imo State now Abia State died at around 7pm in an Abuja hospital. An associate of his stated that the recently appointed Secretary to the PDP Board of Trustees fell ill while returning from Dubai, and was rushed to the hospital once the plane he was in touched down at Abuja. He however died before much could be done by doctors.
Chief Ojo Maduekwe during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s presidency was made Minister for Culture and Tourism and also later became the Minister for Transportation in 2001 and is famed for his proposal that Nigerians return to using bicycles due to fuel scarcity. President Yar’Adua’s also made him Nigeria’s Foreign Minister in 2007.
