Oby Ezekwesili’s Red Card Movement: A Campaign Strategy For Buhari?

Many political analysts will agree that the Chibok Girls saga, was former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Waterloo. The outrage that followed the alleged abduction of the school girls, and Jonathan’s initial inaction was conflagrating and eventually hammered in the final nail into the coffin of Jonathan’s Presidency.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili was at the centre of the campaign for the return of the Chibok Girls, and ultimately attained an international status as an activist for girls. So while the issue led to Jonathan’s fall, it was very beneficial to Ezekwesili who used it to build a very solid status for herself.

Ezekwesili, together with others became a moving force that eventually helped bring down the Jonathan government, while tacitly campaigning for the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s new President. Buhari, they opined, possessed the political will to bring back the girls, and make Nigeria a paradise on earth.

About three years into the Buhari administration, most of the Chibok Girls are still not back. Those who were “returned” came back after the government had empowered the terrorists with money and manpower. In fact, a few weeks back, one of the girls returned at the age of 14, thus sending many into serious fits of doubt seeing as it would mean that she was in SS3 at the age of 11! Ezekwesili kept quiet about this(she neither celebrated the return neither did she speak out about the inherent contradiction in the story).

Buhari has also failed in all aspects, as daily, Nigerians are either slaughtered by Fulani herdsmen, killed by hunger, brutalized by his security agents, waste numerous man hours searching for fuel, bear the brunt of the corrupt practices of allies of the President who swore to fight corruption, etc. Indeed, there seems to be no leg for Buhari’s second term bid to stand on.

Enter Ezekwesili again. This time, she is championing a “Red Card Movement” which seeks to ask that neither the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) or the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) is voted for during the 2019 elections! Impressive, except that elections are about 400 days away, and Ezekwesili’s movement does not have structures to convince voters in Kano, Oturkpo or Umuahia! At the most they can get to voters in Lagos. And Lagos is a key state. If any party desirous of kicking Buhari out of power cannot get Lagos, then it might as well kiss the Presidency goodbye. So it does appear that Ezekwesili’s target, is to ensure that the PDP(the only party that stands a chance of kicking the incompetent Buhari out) has its potential votes divided in Lagos, thus paving the way for Buhari’s victory seeing as majority of the Northern voters(who will likely vote for Buhari again) are basically illiterate.

Recall that Buhari was only able to win based on the mentality of “anybody else other than Jonathan”. This is also the only strategy that will help kick Buhari out in 2019. Ezekwesili’s Red Card Movement negates this and therefore appears to be a ploy to divide votes thus ensuring that Buhari wins!

Nigerians should be awake to this, and ensure that in 2019,Oby Ezekwesili and her likes who sold Nigerians a painted sepulchre in 2015 do not distract them again. The progress of Nigeria hinges firmly on that.
