Niger Delta: Senate To Consider Host Communities Fund Bill

By Ikenga Chronicles November 3, 2016

Reports coming from the Nigerian Senate is that the House will be considering the passage of a “Host Communities Fund Bill”, in addition to the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) which is currently under consideration.

This information was contained in a statement from the office of the Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

Many analysts of the Niger Delta situation in Nigeria have drawn attention to the need for host communities of crude oil ( the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy) to have direct access to some percentages of the fund derived from the oil that come from their land. The passage of this bill will be a welcome relief and should go a long way in guaranteeing community ownership of oil platforms hence ensuring an end (or at least a reduction) in the destruction of oil installations.
