NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Banned Drugs. See List

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control( NAFDAC) has raised alarm over the influx and availability of globally banned drugs and substances in Nigeria.  These drugs have been tagged ‘harmful’ by the agency as they cause various degrees of damage to the body. While still working on ways of bringing this ugly trend to a complete halt, NAFDAC has warned that the following drugs and substances should be avoided. 

ANALGIN:

This popular painkiller with the brand name Novalgin is known to cause bone marrow depression, a defect more serious than what it was expected to treat. 

CISAPRIDE:

Cisapride is taken to reduce acidity and constipation, but it causes irregular heartbeat. The brand names are Ciza and Syspride. 

DROPERIDOL is an anti-depressant that causes irregular heartbeat.

The brand name is Droperol. For your own good, please avoid it. 

Another banned substance is FURAZOLIDONE which is usually taken as an antidiarrhoeal is also known to cause cancer. It might come in the brand names Furoxone or Lomofen.

 NIMESULIDE is a painkiller that also takes care of fever, but it is banned because it causes liver failure.

With brand names being Nise and Nimulid, Nimesulide is banned and should avoided.

NITROFURAZONE is an antibacterial cream with the brand name Furacin. It is banned because it causes cancer. 

The laxative PHENOLPHTHALEIN also causes cancer. Its brand name is Agarol and should be avoided.

PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE is another banned drug. Taken as a treatment for cold and cough, this medicine causes stroke. It might come in the brand names of D’cold , Vicks Action-500, Procold etc. 

OXYPHENBUTAZONE:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Reason for ban : Bone marrow depression.

Brand name : Sioril, Buta etc.

And there’s also PIPERAZINE, taken to combat worms. It is however banned for causing nerve damage. The most popular brand name name is piperazine.

QUINIODOCHLOR is an antidiarrhoeal that has been for its damage to sight. The brand name is Enteroquinol.

It is advised that you check the chemical composition of the drug you buy for any of the above names, as brand names usually vary.
