Maria Sharapova Fails Drug Test

Russian tennis star, Maria Sharapova has confirmed that she failed a drug test during the Australian Open. Sharapova tested positive to meldonium, a drug she has been taking since 2006. Ms. Sharapova said the drug was prescribed for her by a family doctor for health reasons . The test samples were provided by the tennis
star on the 26th of January, the same day she lost to Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Meldonium was not part of the banned substances by the World Anti-Doping Agency(WADA) until the 1st of January, 2016. Sharapova, who takes full responsibilities for the situation confirmed that she received a mail from WADA on the 22nd of December last year, with link to the updated list of banned susbstances, but failed to “click” on the link. Many people, including renowned British journalist Piers Morgan have expressed surprise that the Sharapova team would be that negligent.

Sharapova has been provisionally suspended starting from the 12th of March.
