Lunatic’s Pad: Happy Val to those Rarely Remembered–Dum Syl Aminikpo

By Ikenga Chronicles February 14, 2017

It is St Valentine’s Day. I’m here, jacketed, taking calls, messages, and smiling at friends. If I want to, no matter the workload, I can still walk out, get a drink if I want to, and be cool. When the day winds down, I will hit the road ahead, black home, or wherever I desire to be. It’s Valentine’s Day after all.

On my way to the office, I saw people dressed with touches of red. They are set for the day. From work, they will likely head out. That’s the spirit. It’s Valentine’s Day.

Some will go paranoia today. Relationships will come grinding to a halt. Accusations and counters will hit some, and somewhere, others will be renewing the vows they took, and beginning new ones. It’s Valentine’s Day. I wish you all the best, and pray that you might have as much love as you are willing to give.

When you do find love, be grateful. Some will do everything to get that love. For those people that want some love and freedom to love, I wish you well, and send you the best of the day. On this day, there are people waiting trial for offences they never committed; there are people in the den of kidnappers just because they lived a little comfortably. There are those in hospital beds, begging for a chance to just be alive and walk about again. There are thousands in places where this celebration is outlawed. They are humans too, they know love, desire love, and want express it on a day like this, but their environment will not let them.

To those in war-torn areas; those too sad from hunger to have a thought for love; to the soldiers out in the field; risking their loves so we can live here and wear red, exchange kisses and get drunk; I wish you Happy Valentine’s Day.

In the words of Fun:

‘On our darkest day

When we’re miles away

Sun will come

We will find our way home

If you’re lost and alone

Or you’re sinking like a stone.

Carry on.’

Happy Val.
