Lunatic’s Pad: Dino this, Dino that– Dum Syl Aminikpo

Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West is not your regular senator. Melaye’s son is no one’s regular guy. Dino loves the news; Dino knows how to get in the news.

There are times when Dino is the news.

Dino rides the rough tides, flows with it, and sashays away like a Deeper Life girl who gets the freedom with bum shorts for the first time in safety of her boyfriend’s bedroom and wants to show the world the other side of her the church has held bound. Dino does this, and leaves you hating, or loving him more.

The Honourable courts controversy, and does it with so much glee that it looks like an art; like a profession.

Like a movement where he is the Colossus, and the rest of us mere reluctant followers,  either out of envy for this rare ability, or hatred for reasons unknown.

Dino takes on institutions, people, and classes that many dare not step close to. He is the senator who is not worried to step on toes, to go between  the lines, ask questions, and spit them out like some poison that must never be allowed to last a second on the tongue. From his school days as a Student Union Government (SUG) President at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria to holding reigns at the national level of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the opinion splitting voice has never wavered. That same spirit prevailed at the House of Representative, where the Integrity Group successfully removed the Speaker of the House, Patricia  Ete over corruption charges.

He became a hero to some, and a villain to others.

When the present Senate President, Bukola Saraki was getting the heat over the Code of Conduct issues, the son of Melaye stood strong, firm, like the rock of Gibraltar, unwavering. Even at the point where many senators kept away from the earlier emergency legislative function of playing escort on the tribunal visits by the Senate President, Dino stood, the ever reliable friend.

Some loathed him for this, and referred to as him one of the problems of our democracy. Others adored him, and referenced him as one of the reliable symbols of our democracy.

And that’s who Dino is. That’s the substance that keeps him in shape–the differing opinions for the same reason, for the same person.

If you hate Dino, you are not alone. I hate him too. Yes, But if you love him, rest assured that you are not walking a lonely path. I am a huge fan, and my love for him might even surpass yours.

For the completely anti-team, here’s your villain in the news again. And for the pro group, your hero has added something to his feathers. The Senate Press Corps, the people that actually watch, witness, and report the everyday activity of the  senate have unanimously voted for our beloved hated Dino as the best senator of the year 2016.

Let’s put it in that front page format:

CONTROVERSIAL SENATOR, DINO MELAYE BAGS SENATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

or a friendlier form:

SENATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD: HON. DINO MELAYE TRUMPS COLLEAGUES

One thing though is clear. Dino emerged the best senator of the year 2016. Something we all agree. Before you start throwing the verbal arsenals, let’s look at this list.
