Laying Spiritual Foundation For Your Children: Be Intentional!

I am a husband and father, a Christian educator, teacher, writer, speaker and pastor. And I am still being pastored by the first pastor I ever had–my mother!

Whenever she comes visiting, she ensures she asks my kids if we are having regular family devotions. And if I miss her visit because of work, she leaves a note for me with a scripture or scriptures for my admonition.

One would have thought she should have quit ‘pastoring’ me, but she knows a parent’s spiritual work is never done on the children. My mother’s spiritual sight is now set on her grandchildren. She knows my wife and I are doing everything we can to ensure that our kids have a solid spiritual foundation, but she still won’t let up. We’ve all got our pictures with her as contact point for prayers!

When I was a kid, I would feel my mother’s hand on my head in the middle of the night. She was praying. And that she would do for her four sons! Not to talk of the days of forced scripture memory verses!

Now I am replicating same with my children. I led my first son to christ when he was 5. My initial fear was that he wouldn’t understand the salvation message because of his age. But he did!

Was he not too young? That was one thought I struggled with. Then I realised that thought in itself was a trap of the enemy. Is anyone too young for the Devil to use or corrupt? Do demons discriminate the victims of their possession on account of age?

If not, why should any child be considered too young to follow Christ, to be taught God’s word, to learn how to pray, to sing in the choir, etc? Why should those in the occult be smarter than those of us who claim to be in the light? They ensure their children are already initiates as soon as they can talk!

Dear Christian parents, don’t fall into the Devil’s trap of making you think that your children are too young to be led to Christ. They may not come to an instant decision for Jesus, but ensure that you do not relent in sowing the seed. And I assure you, it’s only a matter of time before they eventually surrender to His lordship.

The earlier your children put on their spiritual shoes in pursuit of Jesus, the better for them, for you, and for the journey of their destinies. Don’t leave your children’s spiritual growth to chance! You must be intentional about it. No Christian parent should be too occupied for that.
