Lassa Fever Claims One In Taraba

A recent Lassa fever outbreak in Taraba has claimed at least one person and left even more hospitalized.

The state Commissioner of health Mr. Innocent Vakkai, stated this yesterday in Jalingo while addressing the Press.

Vakkai said that 15 suspected cases were reported and samples of the persons taken for diagnosis in Lagos where five cases were confirmed to be Lassa fever while the others were cases of ailments other than Lassa fever.

According to Vakkai, two of the persons have been treated and discharged while the other two are still undergoing treatment.

“I can confirm to you that we have lost one person to the scourge of Lassa fever while two are currently hospitalized and are responding well to treatment. Two other persons who were also diagnosed with the scourge have been treated and discharged and have reunited with their families”, he said.

Vakkai, who said the government had put in place measures to ensure rapid response to suspected cases of Lassa fever and other contagious disease outbreak in the state called on the people the avoid practices that would make them vulnerable.

He said the massive media campaigns by the state government to provide sensitization and proactive measures of the government have helped a lot as the instances of infection so far are much less compared with last year’s figures.

Vakkai also called on pregnant women and nursing mothers to take advantage of facilities put in place by the government to help reduce the prevalence of maternal and child mortality, while saying commendable success has been recorded in this regards too.
