John Kerry Cannot Guarantee The Success Of Syria Ceasefire

U.S Secretary of State John Kerry has stated that the recent ceasefire agreement reached in Syria is not 100% guaranteed to succeed. Kerry stated this during a testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“I’m not going to say this process is sure to work because I don’t know,” Kerry said

He however pointed out that if the ceasefire would allow for the inflow of humanitarian aid to Syrians, then a certain victory would have been recorded.Over 250,000 people have been killed in Syria during the violence, with about 11million displaced.

The ceasefire is to see to the cessation of all hostilities apart from those targeted at such groups as the Islamic State extremist group, the Nusra Front and other groups designated as terrorist groups by the United Nations Security Council.

With the Syrian government asserting that its operations against terrorist groups will continue, and the absence of any punitive measures to be meted out to violators of the truce, many people are unclear on how the truce will be fully enforced. There is also the belief among Republicans that President Obama may not be able to enforce punitive measures against Moscow.

John Kerry is scheduled to meet with Russia, and other world leaders within the next few days, to iron out modalities for the ceasefire. The ceasefire which was agreed to on Monday comes into effect on Saturday.
