Infantino Elected New FIFA President

Gianni Infantino has been elected FIFA president at the Extraordinary FIFA Congress which held in Zurich today. He secured a simple majority vote of 115 as against Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa’s 88 in the second round of voting. With none of the candidates gaining 2/3rd of the votes in the first round of voting, a second round of voting had to be conducted where a simple majority(provided the candidate got over 50% of votes cast) was sufficient.

During his victory speech, Infantino asserted that; “We will restore the pride of FIFA”, and called for support from all to kick-start a new era of FIFA.

Infantino succeeds fellow Swiss, Sepp Blatter.
