INEC Suspends The Announcement of Results In Rivers Re-Run Elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced that it has suspended the announcement (and completion of voting) of results in the Rivers State re- run elections into state and national assemblies. INEC stated that this suspension was prompted by widespread violence which has led to several casualties, with some INEC staff abducted, and many others prevented from carrying out their duties safely. The suspension however does not affect areas where collation had been completed.
Although there has been no official announcement of results, INEC indicates that complete collation has taken place in one Federal Constituency, and at least nine state constituencies.

INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi on Sunday, explained the reason for the suspension thus;

“There were reports of numerous attacks resulting in fatalities, kidnappings, ballot snatching, diversion of officials and materials, amongst others, which necessitated its suspension in eight Local Government Areas.Regrettably, such deviant behaviour has continued today. Several permanent and adhoc staff engaged have been attacked, again resulting in fatalities, while some have been forcibly abducted and taken to unknown destinations”.

The suspension INEC stated will continue until a comprehensive report has been made available by its field officials.

The Rivers re-run, has been marred by widespread violence with the struggle by PDP and APC to affirm who “owns” the state the major reason. Some also see the widespread violence to be a consequence of the bitter feud between the current governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, and the past governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi. There have been accusations and counter-accusations being traded by people from both camps, with the same incident often having varying twists, depending on who was telling the story.
