If Shut The Hell Up Is No Hate Speech, Then, Shut The Hell Up, Festus Keyamo!

— Dr. Vitus Ozoke

“If you block and remove friends from your social media platforms: WhatsApp, Facebook etc. because you consider their comments and posts offensive then you have no justification to condemn the Anti Social Media and Hate Speech Bill” (Festus Keyamo, SAN)

Festus Keyamo will never cease to disappoint. And he is supposed to be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria…almost became the Attorney General of Nigeria. What a shame!

Let’s draw five analogies here that serve to highlight the hyper ridiculousness of this sort of thinking:

ANALOGY ONE:
If you block and remove some restaurants from your list of favorite eating joints because you consider their food and menu unpalatable to your taste, then you have no justification to condemn government’s Anti Restaurant and Hate Business Bill [which carries death penalty].

ANALOGY TWO:
If you block and remove some Senior Advocates of Nigeria from your list of favorite Senior Advocates because you consider their arguments and reasoning dumb and idiotic, then you have no justification to condemn government’s Anti SANs and Hate Legal Practitioners Bill [which carries death penalty].

ANALOGY THREE:
If you block and remove some medical doctors from your list of preferred healthcare providers because you consider their medical skills and expertise insufficient, then you have no justification to condemn government’s Anti Doctors and Hate Medical Practice Bill [which carries death penalty].

ANALOGY FOUR:
If you block and remove some political parties from your list of favorite political parties because you consider their policies and actions stupid and oppressive, then you have no justification to condemn government’s Anti Party and Hate Politics Bill [which carries death penalty].

ANALOGY FIVE:
If you block and remove some senators from your list of sane and useful senators because you consider them fools and dimwits, then you have no justification to condemn government’s Anti Senators and Hate Lawmakers Bill [which carries death penalty].

How more ridiculous can Keyamo be to draw that sort of silly analogy? So, whatever we find offensive we criminalize with death penalty? So the standard for death penalty in Keyamo’s Nigeria is now whatever gives offense to us? Does Keyamo even understand what democracy and free society mean?

Even assuming that the standard is now whatever we find offensive, why doesn’t Keyamo in his silly analogy include death in what we can do to our friends when we consider their comments and posts on social media platforms offensive? If all we can do is block and remove such friends from our friends list, why does Keyamo see those as equivalent actions to the proposed governmental action of criminalization of speech with death penalty?

It is no secret that Festus Keyamo actively lobbied for the position of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), which, thank God, he did not get. And recall that I had congratulated Nigerians when Keyamo failed to get the position of AGF, likening it to Nigerians having dodged the bullet. Well, now you see why it was a bullet dodged. You are welcome!
