How Mikel Chose 180million Nigerians Over His Father’s Life

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel chose the happiness of 180million Nigerians ahead of his father’s life, the player has revealed.

Mikel’s father, Michael Obi was kidnapped just before the Argentina vs Nigeria game with the kidnappers contacting him four hours before the game.

The kidnappers demanded N10million and threatened to shoot Michael Obi instantly if Mikel contacted the authorities.

Miekl then faced the challenge of telling his coach and the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF), and thus risk distablizing the team. Patriotic as ever, Mikel chose to keep it all to himself, in order not to destabilize the team.

“I was confused. I did not know what to do, but in the end I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down,” he said.

“I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first. I was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody.

“And I did not want to discuss it with the coach because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to the coach or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game. So as much as I wanted to discuss it with the coach, I could not do it.”

A visibly tortured Michael Obi was rescued on July 2, after a gun battle between the police and the kidnappers.
