How I Became Vice President-Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has broken the silence on the controversy surrounding his emergence as running mate to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election.

The vice president confirmed Thursday night that he was recommended to the position by someone in a high place whose name he however did not disclose.

Osinbajo who spoke at the presidential dinner organised in honour of over 200 graduates and beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja tactically refused to mention the name of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu who many believed help him to  emerge as  Vice-President.

Recall that of late controversy has surrounded how Osinbanjo emerged as Vice-President to Buhari at the expense of Tinubu. According to Tinubu, Osinbajo was a product of religious balancing which became an issue in last year’s presidential election.

But Osinbajo, while speaking at the dinner, said that “somebody somewhere has to give a helping hand, whether to be a vice president or to be an aircraft pilot or to be an engineer.”

He told the gathering: “I was in a group of young men and women and one of them asked the question how did I become vice president, I was never a politician or anything like that.”

“So I tried to explain; it is quite simple that someone somewhere has to recommend you. Somebody somewhere has to give you a helping hand. “Whether to be a vice president or to be an aircraft pilot or to be an engineer, somebody somewhere has to give you an opportunity and I think that all of you that are here today are the beneficiaries of the opportunities that you have somehow received.”

Sources have averred that the inability of Osinbajo to publicly name Tinunu as his godfather was possibly to avoid backlash from the presidency especially now that Buhari and the Jagaban are in cold war.
