The House Is Crumbling All Around Buhari

As 2017 wound to a close, it seemed that the bolts that held together the sham that is the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration began to loosen speedily. All around the administration was extreme chaos, which revealed the numbing incompetence, cluelessness, corruption, and lies that are the bricks with which the administration was built on.

One can say that the beginning of the end for President Buhari was the “END SARS” campaign. It was a campaign that captured the painful cry of citizens that their “father”(President Buhari) looks into the deadly brutality, blackmail, extortion and intimidation being perpetrated against Nigerian youths by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS). Somehow, despite the attention this call generated, and the ripples it caused in international spaces, Buhari, who is the father of the children crying, totally ignored the call. Till date, there has been no statement by him to that effect! It was a complete display of lack of interest in the pains of Nigerians, and a show of Mr. President’s insensitivity. Perhaps his handlers knew this, which was probably why they felt that releasing a documentary showing the “Human Side of President Buhari” was necessary. Nigerians did not buy that, neither were they moved. By ignoring the youths’ call, Buhari had shown to them, that he is unkind and inhumane.

The “End SARS” campaign was still in full bloom when the entire nation was thrown into extreme hardship due to acute fuel scarcity. As has become the trademark of the Buhari administration, the scarcity was quickly blamed on saboteurs anxious to tarnish the good image of Mr. President! This was even as petroleum marketers revealed that the scarcity was occasioned by the paucity of the product owing to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC)’s–a body that is under President Buhari as Minister of Petroleum, and the sole importer of refined petroleum(the Buhari administration having failed to revitalise the refineries in the country as it boasted it will do during campaign)– inability to import enough quantity!

But that was not all, as accusations and counter accusations were traded concerning the fuel scarcity, it was revealed through the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru(and confirmed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo), that fuel subsidy, which Buhari had earlier said does not exist, and which he later said he removed, was being paid by the government! Talk of lying to the populace! So in essence, the Buhari administration lied to the people that it had removed fuel subsidy payment, and thus hiked the price of fuel, and then went behind to be illegally making those payments! And that is from a man who says he is Mr. Integrity and Mr. Anti-corruption!

As if that was not enough, on the 29th of December, 2017, President Buhari signed off on the appointment of members and chairmen of the boards of Agencies and Parastatals in the country. Amongst those appointed by President Buhari were about eight dead persons!(the numbers continue to rise as people examine the list in details). That represents for many the height of ineffectuality, cluelessness and corruption. That the Buhari administration can make such a gaffe explains why in a little over two years since Buhari became President, the country has been run into the ground.

In a sane country, the January 1st New Year message of President Muhammadu Buhari will contain his resignation. But this is Nigeria, and even as the house continues to fall all over Buhari, his supporters and champions will continue to find foolish ways of explaining or excusing his gross incompetence, crass ignorance, lack of mental ability to govern a country, and his clearly visible lack of empathy.
