Free Ese: Bayelsa Civil Society Organizations To Stage a Walk Today

As part of campaigns to see to the peaceful resolution of the case of Ese Oruru, a 14-year old Bayelsa school girl who was taken to Kano by Yinusa without her parent’s consent, converted to Islam, and married,a collection of Civil,Religious,Community organizations in Bayelsa state, together with some Ministries and Departments would be staging a peaceful walk through Yenegoa today. The walk which is being coordinated by the Child Protection Network will see participants peacefully try to draw the attention of the Federal Government to Ese’s plight, and urge them to intervene and secure the young girl’s return to her parents in Yenagoa.

A leading member of the Women in Peace and Security Network in Bayelsa state, Benita told our correspondent that the walk will take place early in the morning, and will be completely peaceful.

Ese, who is only 14-years old was taken from her parents in August of 2015 by Yinusa, and has been reportedly married to him under Islamic rites. Bayelsans and so many other Nigerians have since been lamenting that Ese is not up to the age of consent, hence Yinusa’s actions are tantamount to abduction, and child defilement. Efforts made so far to secure her release have met with stiff bureaucratic maneuverings. Ese, prior to being taken was a Christian and is under-aged and therefore not of age to give consent under any law that her religion and ethnicity uphold.
