Clergy forum in Taraba commend Ishaku for maintaining peace, urges him to do more

The forum of clergy of Tiv extraction in Taraba on Friday commended the efforts of Governor Darius Ishaku in maintaining peace in the state.

The forum which rose from its quarterly meeting in Bali noted with grief concern the recent outbreak of crisis in Gassol local government and other cases of targeted killings going on in some parts of central and southern Taraba.

Chairman of the forum and the Cathedral Administrator of Our Lady Queen of Peace,  Mile six Jalingo, Very Rev. Fr. Simon Akuraga while briefing journalists at the end of the meeting called for prayers for peace to reign in the state and the country.

“It is sad that since 2014, killings have been going in Taraba,  but the world seem not to be aware of the senseless killings going on here.

“Many families have been rendered homeless and their dreams shattered. Many are still in Specialist hospital in Jalingo and other hospitals while thousands of people are living in penury in IDPs camps in Dan-Anacha and  Sabongida Takai.

“Though we commend the governor for all that he is doing. But he should personally visit these people and give them hope and make adequate security arrangement for them to return to their homes,” he said.

Quoting from the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Akuraga noted that a just society must be the achievement of politics, not of the church, and that the promotion of justice through efforts to bring about openness of mind and will to the demands of the common good is something which concerns the church deeply.

He then reminded those in positions of authority that the church cannot replace the state, but at the same time cannot remain on the sidelines in the fight for a just society, urging the government across board to do the needful and end incessant killings across the country even as he called on all Nigerians to support government efforts in promoting peace.
