Emeka Ihedioha Unveils His Blueprint For A New Imo State

Hon. Emeka Ihedioha is the former Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives and the Imo state governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In this Q&A session in Dallas, Texas, with Ikenga Chronicles in attendance, Hon. Ihedioha provides answers to how he will run Imo State when he is elected the governor.

Q: There are a lot of people contesting for the governorship position in Imo state, who are from the Owerri zone that you come from. How do you intend to work with them so they cannot jeopardize your chances?

Ihedioha: The Imo state governorship position is not a child’s play, so if you want to contest for it, you must be prepared. You cannot expect the contest to be easy. However, I am very prepared and I know that I am the most qualified.

Q: How do you envision including Imolites in the diaspora in your government if you win?

Ihedioha: We will set up a Policy Advisory Committee of knowledgeable Imo sons and daughters wherever they might be. Even if the person is in Alaska, provided the person has something to offer, we will incorporate him or her. That is why I think we need to document our people everywhere. I am also thinking of setting up a Diaspora Advisory Board. We need to tap into the reserves of knowledge of our people abroad.

Also, my government will create an enabling environment for our people abroad to invest. In essence, I will run an inclusive government.

Q: How do you intend to counter the threats of your opponents in the coming election?

Ihedioha: God is the ultimate giver of power. However, you must know that our people are not ready to make mistakes again. I know that you are probably worried about rigging, but let me assure you that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is taking the election in Imo state seriously. We will vote and protect our votes, and our votes will count.

Q: In what ways will your government support micro-businesses?

Well, first of all, you should know that part of my plans is to set up cottage industries in all the Local Government Areas. We will also set up Trust Funds to support those who truly prove that they are serious about doing business and growing our economy. We will also set up an Investment Promotion Council. This council will be charged with activating private sector development in Imo state, and promoting businesses.

Q: Do you have any plans for Agriculture?

Yes! Imo state is blessed with arable land and so we must pay attention to Agriculture. I plan that within four years, I would plant three million palm seedlings. We can then take it from there. We will also make other provisions to support and boost Agriculture as an industry in the state. Agriculture is the future of our state. If we invest in it, we will reap bountifully.

Q: As a former legislator, do you have plans as it concerns the laws in the state?

Ihedioha: One of the key things we highlighted during my time as Deputy Speaker was how faulty the Nigerian constitution was. It was a document handed to us by the military and cannot qualify as a people’s constitution. So we set up committees and brought in so many people who represented various facets of the country, to work on an amendment. I still have the draft that was submitted and from there, I intend to pick a few things that we can work with the Imo State House of Assembly, to make into laws.

For instance, there is no Due Process Unit in Imo state. When I become governor, I will institutionalize that.

Also, one of the things I want to get done, is to guaranty the autonomy of our Local Government Areas.
