Eagles Sweat Over Mikel’s Fitness

By Ikenga Chronicles June 25, 2018

The Super Eagles and their medics are reportedly sweating to get John Obi Mikel fit for selection ahead of the crucial World Cup match against Argentina on Tuesday, June 26.

The scan conducted on Saturday showed that the Tianjin Teda star suffered a fracture of the Metacarpal in the closing minutes of Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Iceland on Friday.

Although Coach Gernot Rohr has continued to play down the injury concerns, saying the midfielder will play with a cast against the South American powerhouse, report has it that he is still being worked on.

“Unfortunately there is one injury, we have the captain who has fracture of the Metacarpal but I think he can play with a cast, the medical team is working on it,” Rohr stated in a video uploaded by the Nigeria Football Federation.

“Everybody had massage, special massages for the legs, for recovery. There are no injuries again, the weather is fine, yesterday we had rain, which was good for recovery.”

Meanwhile, the Coach has admitted that the Super Eagles must be on the attack against Argentina in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday and diligently take the chances that come their way against the two-time World Cup winners.

“Simply put, we must take even half chances, and be on the offensive as much as possible. Perhaps, a draw could be good to qualify, but we cannot think and play for a draw. Sometimes, when you play for a draw, you get punched in the face late in the day.
