Don’t Dress To Kill, Dress To Advance

— Sola Sorinolu

What piqued my interest in this subject was Joseph’s first reaction when Pharaoh sent for him to be brought from prison.

“Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to pharaoh” Gen.41:14

He did it to gain favour with his appearance before Pharaoh. This was even before Pharaoh knew how ‘skillful’ he was. The Egyptians were used to shaven heads. So Joseph, despite being a foreigner, had to be seen to ‘blend in’. He needed to look the part.

To ease your advancement at work and in your career, study the ‘dress code’ for your industry and align yourself with it. Every industry has its ‘dress code’, albeit unwritten.

You may not have a second chance to make a first impression.

I’ve been told of graduates from a particular private university in Nigeria who ‘deliver’ just by their appearance at interviews. And more often than not, they get the jobs! They have ‘it’ both in their heads and in their looks!

You work hard, you pray hard, you have the experience and the certifications, ensure that the way you ‘appear’ does not become “the little fox” that spoils your career progression vines!
