Deputy Governor of Rivers State Calls For Unity In The Fight Against Child Marriage

Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, the deputy governor of Rivers State has called for a disregard of ethnic origin and religion in the fight against child marriage, and¬†other forms of Violence Against Women and Girls. Dr. Harry-Banigo, who was commenting against the backdrop of the Ese Oruru saga stated that the young girl’s plight was a source of pain to her, as a grandmother and mother. She commended all who played parts in making sure that the young girl was taken away from her abductor and called for psycho-social and trauma counselling to be provided for Ese.

The deputy governor said that what Ese went through has made her more resolute in doing her part to ensure that Governor Nyesom Wike’s promises to improve on security, and the education of the girl-child are fulfilled.

Dr. Harry-Banigo concluded by calling the release of Ese to her parents “…a victory for the united front to stop violence against women and girls.”
