Conflict Key In New Cases Of Polio- UNICEF

Following the confirmation of two fresh cases of poliovirus in Borno, Nigeria, UNICEF has re-iterated the need for attention to be paid to the link between conflict and polio. According to the UNICEF Polio Eradication Director, Reza Hossaini

“We cannot deny the connection between conflict and the continued threat of polio. The two new cases mean children across the Lake Chad region are now at particular risk. With our partners, we will not stop until we reach every child with polio vaccination,”

Nigeria had gone two years without any incident of polio, and was about to be declared polio-free before this latest outbreak. The two new cases were discovered at an accessible part of Borno State, with the possibility of more cases existing in the inaccessible parts.
