Buhari and Plagiarism: Can A Fraudster Fight Fraud? By Omoghena Moses

Recently it’s been buzzing and viral on social media on how our dear President Buhari plagiarised President Obama’s speech.¬†From the comments I have been reading on social media and even few reactions I saw on broadcast media it is quite shocking to know that some Nigerians don’t see anything wrong with this. In fact a senator in reacting to this in an interview said “there is no big deal in sounding alike in someone’s speech just as long as the motive and intention behind the speech is genuine”. Really? When I heard these words I felt like going through my TV screen and slapping some sense into the senator’s head! Perhaps the senator and indeed many others don’t even know what “plagiarism” means!

Like the senator said “there is no big deal in sounding alike in someone’s speech just as long as the motive and intention behind the speech is genuine” but this is not just ANY speech? This is a speech coming from the mouth and brain cells of the Number 1 Citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; someone who is supposed to be well in touch with my current standard of living; someone who is supposed to be passionate and crazy about my well-being and existence. Therefore it is from this knowledge and passion about ME that he draws the inspiration to address me. Now if the words that come out of his mouth to ME are not his own and in fact stolen, then it means he’s totally aloof and clueless of my existence and totally has no idea on what he’s talking about!

So if this is true how then can his “motive” or “intention” for me be genuine? If the President and all his numerous and irrelevant presidential and media aides are too lazy to wholeheartedly sit their asses down and genuinely compose a decent, original and creative address before he speaks to ME then it really tells me how little and undervalued I am to him as well as how grossly deficient he is in when it comes to one of the very important characteristics of Leadership! Mr. President you have only told me that you are LAZY and that you lack ORIGINALITY.

For those of my fellow Nigerians who say “this is not a big deal”, guess what? Plagiarism is an act of FRAUD punishable by the law at least in a civilized society.

So let’s do the math here: if plagiarism is an act of fraud and our dearly beloved President Buhari has been found guilty of plagiarism; what does this make Buhari? Did I hear you say Fraud?
