British Council Launches Project To Artistically Address Community Issues In Nigeria

The British Council as part of its project to promote the use of Art to encourage community dialogue/participation, while addressing community issues, organized a three-day workshop tagged “Acting Together”. The workshop which held at the Denis Hotel,Ndjamena Road, Wuse 2, Abuja saw participants from different Arts and Civil Society Organizations from Rivers , Kano,Abuja,Plateau, and Kaduna, participating actively.

The training was facilitated by Carol Moore(Actress, Film maker, and Director), and Katie Richardson(Musical Director, Composer, and Musician).While the Civil Society Organizations offered steer on community engagements and facilitation, the Arts companies offered ideas on creative ways of addressing issues. The workshop featured the sharing of creative works from Ireland and Nigeria, and the composition of a poem entitled “Resilience” by all participants.

The British Council, to further aid participants announced that participating Arts organizations are to partner with Civil Society Organizations and come up with proposals on how to use Art to address the problems of select communities. Five grants worth £5,000 each are up for grabs.

The entirety of the project is expected to end by the first week of May, 2016. The British Council Director in charge of the project, Uju Dubas-Agbasi pointed out that this is just the seminal project, with the possibility of further funding opportunities hinged on the success of the first project.
