Black Literary Friday: Umberto Eco Dies At 84

Friday the 19th of February suddenly turned to a Black Friday for the literary world. While we were still grappling with the demise of Harper Lee, news filtered in that Umberto Eco, the author of The Name of the Rose had died. A semiotic scholar, Umberto Eco “sought to interpret cultures through their signs and symbols”.

Mr. Eco, who published seven novels also taught at the University of Bologna. He also published several non-fictional works, thus making him a “bridger” of two worlds.

Eco’s death was confirmed by his Italian publisher Bompiani. He was aged 84.
