“APC Will Record A Landslide Victory At The Edo Guber Election” — APC Chieftain

By Ikenga Chronicles September 28, 2016

Chief Kingsley Okafor is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Imo State. Currently the National Coordinator of National Progressives Coalition, he was also the Deputy Director of the Atiku Campaign, South East.

In this interview with Ikenga Chronicles, Chief Okafor talks about why the APC was able to win the 2015 Presidential election against a sitting president; President Buhari’s delivery on campaign promises, and the Edo State Governorship elections.

Excerpts.

IC: Thank you for making out time to have us sir, please can you tell us a little about yourself?

Chief Okafor: I am Chief Kingsley Okafor, from Ihioma Orlu, in Imo State. My traditional title is Omeiheukwu 1 of Ihioma Orlu. I am also the Traditional Defence Minister of Ihioma Orlu. I am married to Lolo Claire Okafor, and we have four boys. I am the president of Korporate Kings Group Limited, which has subsidiaries in consultancy, construction, and interior designing. My major business focus is in Art consultancy, which is part of the creative industries. I am actually a trained sculptor. I got my first degree from the University of Benin.

Politically, I was initially the Imo State chairman of ACD (Action Congress of Democrats), which later metamorphosed into ACN. I used to be the deputy national secretary South-East of the CAN (Action Congress of Nigeria). I am currently the national coordinator of the National Progressives Coalition. The coalition’s motto is; “Promoting Good Governance and National Integration”.

IC: Impressive. One of the most magnificent things that happened in the Nigerian political sphere was the APC winning the 2015 presidential elections against a sitting president in a free and fair election. What do you think made that possible?

Chief Okafor: A variety of factors. People were tired of the 16-years of PDP rule, and wanted a change. The people had gotten tired of so many broken promises, and corruption and felt it was time they got something else. The APC was the answer to all of that.

IC: In terms of its campaign promises, do you think the present federal government under the APC is delivering?

Chief Okafor: Yes, they are, to the extent that the economic situation lets them. You must understand that the economic situation is a worldwide phenomenon. There is a plummet in oil prices which we solely depended on. This country depended on a mono-economy, and when the price of oil plummeted, it hit us hard. While we do not want to lay blames, we must accept that past profligacies helped place us where we are now, hence the recession we are in. We must truthfully accept that the level of malfeasance and corruption in the past is mind boggling. The present government is doing so much with so little resources, while diversifying the economy at the same time, to reduce the dependence on oil. It is a process that will get rough and then become smooth for the future. Nigerians just have to be patient.

IC: You just said that Nigerians have to be patient as the present government tries to negotiate through this rough patch and place us on a smooth road to a better future. Do you think that what is happening at the federal level–in terms of the difficult economic conditions– will affect the Edo State elections holding today?

Chief Okafor: I don’t think so. If the election is free and fair as guaranteed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, then the APC will win with a landslide due to Governor Oshiomhole’s legacies. Granted that it might get a little tight due to the economic situation but the APC candidate will win due to the achievements of Governor Oshiomhole.

The PDP on its own is in crises. For a while, we did not even know whom the APC candidate–Godwin Obaseki– was contesting against! There was a candidate from the Modu Sherrif camp, then another one.

Again, we have heard the PDP candidate say that if he wins, the birthday of former governor Lucky Igbinedion will become a state holiday. Edo people do not want a state that is remote-controlled by a political godfather!

These are the reasons why the APC candidate will win.

IC: If the APC candidate wins, what should Edo people expect from him?

Chief Okafor: Obaseki is a sound economist. He has a lot of experiences and connections. He has even worked with Alhaji Aliko Dangote. He knows a lot of people and will attract a lot of investments to the state. And in terms of security, he will also provide that. Again, for the sake of continuity, Edo people need him so that the remaining promises of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will be followed up on.

IC: Thank you so much for having us.

Chief Okafor: You are welcome.
