Algeria Wary Of Nigeria’s Strike Force

Newly-appointed Algeria Coach Georges Leekens has warned his players to be wary of the Super Eagles’ strikers, when they meet on November 12 for the World Cup qualifiers. Leekens said his players must step up their game if his wards are to escape defeat in Uyo.

The Super Eagles’ attack has Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, Leicester’s Ahmed Musa, Watford’s Odion Ighalo, Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and Olympiacos’ Brown Ideye. Leekens however expressed optimism in getting a favourable result in Nigeria.

Speaking during his first press conference in Algiers on Tuesday, Leekens who replaced Miloslav Rajevac after Algeria’s 1-1 draw against Cameroon, said;

“Have you seen Nigeria’s attack? They have Musa, Iwobi and Iheanacho. They are world class players. You need special drills to stop them and that we plan to do when we meet.”

The Belgian also urged the Algerian media to embrace his tactical approach to the Nigerian game which he described as the “Algerian way” with emphasis on quick movement and direct play.

“I’ll ask my players to play the Algerian way. They will play that way. Not just with technique, but with their heart.”

“I don’t like dribbling for its sake. I like vertical play. Everyone has to defend. Everyone must run 10m. That’s not a lot. Playing without the ball is important.”

On his squad list for the match, Leekens said, “I’ve released a list of 18 players who play abroad. Then we’ll complete it. I don’t want to hear local players, overseas-based players. There are only Algerian players.”

Nigeria top Group B of African qualifying series with three points, while both Algeria and Cameroon have one each, with Zambia pointless but the 67- year-old said Algeria could still pick the sole ticket for Russia 2018 World Cup.

“It’s very emotional to be at head of the national team for the second time,” he said.

“The last time I was here we qualified for 2004 AFCON. I had to leave for personal reasons.”

“I am ambitious. I could have gone to Qatar for money. We have a good team. Motivated players, motivated staff, and we’ll do everything to be efficient.”
