AFCON 2019: Rohr Speaks On Egypt Threat

Super Eagles’ manager, Gernot Rohr, has stated that his side is not afraid of the threat from Egypt as a team but noted he is not comfortable with the club as host.

Reports suggested that three-time champions Super Eagles would know their first round opponents at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt when the draw is staged in April.

Rohr said the Eagles are a big side and should not be afraid of facing any opponent in the continental showpiece but it would be difficult confronting the home side Egypt.

“When you qualify for a competition like this you should be ready to face any team; we are not afraid of playing against any side in the tournament but most times it is always very difficult to play against the host country. I have the experience when I was the coach of Gabon when they hosted the Nations Cup; the whole country usually behind the team, it is usually tough for their opponents,” he said.

Meanwhile, a top official of the Egypt Football Association(EFA)disclosed the AFCON draw would be conducted in the first week of April.

“The draw will be in the first week of April,” EFA official Ahmed Medjahed said.

“Six stadiums for the competition are already ready, while we will have all nine stadiums for the AFCON by April.”

The 2019 AFCON will see an expanded tournament of 24 teams and it will be played between June 15 and July 13.
