ABSURD: Correcting The Vice In The Vice President Law

— Vitus Ozoke

Nigeria’s new law that a vice president who is sworn in as president, and who completes whatever is left of a presidential term upon the death, incapacitation, resignation, disappearance, or impeachment of the president, can seek and be elected into the office of president for only one full term, is a bad law. It is not measured. A good law, and a better approach, would have recognized the stage and what is left of the original presidency at the time the vice president is sworn into the office of president.

There has to be a meaningful difference between a vice president who is sworn in as president two months into the original presidential term and a vice president who is sworn in as president with only two months left of the original presidential term. The new law should have required that the vice president must have been sworn in as president with at least half (two years) of the original presidential term left to run. A vice president should not be punished, as it were, for the ill fate of the president. That’s absurd.

So, I hope President Buhari and the Nigerian lawmakers revisit this law with a view to correcting the observed absurdity.
