4GLTE: ANOTHER GLOBACOM AND MTN WAR? — Dum Syl Aminikpo

‘How can you claim being the grandmaster of data and I can’t open a page within 15mins? I’d rather have 2gb that I can use than have 8gb for the same amount that frustrates my day’, Dagogo Nelson Elendu, a media practitioner wrote on Facebook, expressing his anger at Glo, the self-styled Grand Master of Data.

Glo, ever the first for something new in the mobile telephony industry in Nigeria, started per second billing, data sharing, Blackberry service, and lowest recharge rates.

Glo slashed its data cost to an all-time low by giving as much as 24 gigabytes for N5,000. For the same amount, their closest rival , MTN gives 10 gigabytes. However, the Glo network has been poor, so poor that many subscribers who rushed to it have opted for other more expensive but reliable data plans by other networks. The announcement of the introduction of the 4GLTE was therefore seen as a relief, though tainted with skepticism. How will a service provider whose 3G hasn’t even been up to the 2G of other networks comfortably provide 4GLTE?

That’s not the main talking point though.

The rival company, MTN Nigeria, on the same day, announced the introduction of its 4GLTE too. While that of Glo was done at a robust ceremony, MTN’s, like some errant child who doesn’t want to be blamed by the father for not taking part in family chores, came later on, rather hushed, and only on blogs.

The battle line is drawn.

The 4GLTE war has started in Nigeria.

Will Glo improve on their epileptic network, or will they allow MTN to conquer the scene?

The line’s drawn.
