2018 World Cup: Rohr Takes Eagles’ Goalkeeper To First Team

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has reportedly ensured the promotion of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to Deportivo de La Coruña’s first team ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

The former Nigeria U-17 reserve goalkeeper is the undisputed first choice goalie of La Coruña’s reserve team, Deportivo Fabril, but has been invited by manager Clarence Seedorf to train with the main team ahead of La Liga matches.

The report says the development was influenced by Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr.

”He is a young lad, experience comes with playing games and being exposed to friendly matches and that’s what the coaches have been doing with Uzoho, not just Francis, with the other goalkeepers as well Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi,” Toyin Ibitoye, Super Eagles Media Officer, told Channels Television.

”A lot of work has gone in. The goalkeeper coach that is in Europe, Enrico Pionetti, is following up on Uzoho.

”Gernot Rohr has also used his clout to ensure that Uzoho is allowed to train with the A team of Deportivo de La Coruña, that gives him a lot of exposure and toughness. The same thing with Ezenwa, Alloy Agu has been on his case, the medical people have also been following up with him.

”We have goalkeepers that are prepared, psyched up to go out there to achieve success for us.”

On October 15, 2017, Uzoho debuted in La Liga, keeping a clean-sheet against SD Eibar and became the youngest foreign goalkeeper to debut in the league, before taking his international bow against Argentina a month later.
