2018 ‎W/C Qualifiers: NPFL Stars To Be Snubbed

By Ikenga Chronicles October 19, 2016

There are strong indications that players from the domestic league would be dropped for next month’s World Cup qualifier against the Fennecs of Algeria.

Five players from the domestic scene were part of the Super Eagles’ final squad that defeated Zambia 2-1 in Ndola, Zambia last week.

But a source close to the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) revealed that the Super Eagles Manager was contemplating leaving out all home-based players, as a result of their match rustiness, since the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season has ended.

“The players from the domestic league will be left out of the Algeria match, because the season is over and the coach cannot vouch for their fitness.”

“He would rather use the positions taken by these players from the league to try out some other professionals in still-active leagues overseas,” said the reliable source.

England-based due of Victor Moses of Chelsea and Watford’s Isaac Success [who missed the trip to Ndola due to injury], as well as red-hot Feirense of Portugal player Oghenekaro Etebo, are already set to return to the squad.

Also primed for his return is South Africa- based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

“Akpeyi will return for the Algeria match, as he has been playing well and regularly in South Africa,” a team official disclosed.
