The appropriateness Of Christmas Burials — Vitus Ozoke

If Christmas is about the ultimate redemptive birth, the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, why do Christians choose Christmas period for the burial and funeral of their relatives? This is especially the case in Nigeria. Cases exist of deaths that occurred several months before Christmas; yet, burials are scheduled for Christmas. Why are we contradicting the message of Christmas and the Bible?

Doesn’t Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 say that “There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heavens….A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.”

Let’s make Christmas all about Christ. When we schedule burials and funerals around Christ’s birthday, not only do we rain on His parade, we also make it less about Him and more about us.

Even the Bible suggests that Christ would rather that life-giving engagements be accorded priority over burials. When a disciple asked Christ to allow him to first go bury his father before returning to follow Him, Matthew 8:22 suggests what sounds like a stern rebuke from Jesus: “Follow me, let the dead bury their own dead.”

If Christ would not allow burial to interfere with His mission of saving us, by dying for us, why are we allowing burial to interfere with His birthday? Are we ingrates? Is the Pope even aware of this? The Pope must hear this!…lol

Anyway, May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace…Amen
